世上刀兵劫

千百年來碗裡羹,怨聲如海恨難平; 欲知世上刀兵劫,但聽屠門夜半聲。

──明‧愿雲

For millenniums, in bowls where the food has been, Grief roars like seas, it’s hard to screen. Want to know the world's terrors of wars? Just hear the slaughterhouse's midnight scene.

— Yuan Yun, Ming dynasty

Notes:

It’s not necessarily a call for vegetarianism, but simply pointing out the similarity between wars and animal slaughtering. Both have been happening for millenniums, normalized by people, and even celebrated (by the side that’s not slaughtered of course). So the poem is just a gentle reminder that, there is the sound of grief and pain from the victims’ side, that is quite significant and once you listened to it, it’s really hard to unhear.
